"Mateo," she whispered, stunned.

And not stunned.

He was beautiful, and fierce, and… familiar. Everything clicked into place. Every half suspicion, every instinct she'd thought was tangled up in the stress of her kidnapping.

He bugled, wings flapping, long neck twisting as he studied his long body. "I know this is a shock," Calla said, "but just stay calm."

The head swung around like a whip and she winced. "Watch where you're pointing that. And don't take any deep breaths." It would be some time before he'd be able to flame—having never done it before—but she didn't want to take any chances.

"I don't understand how you can be a dragon. Where are your—" Calla cut herself off. The question was tacky at best, painful at worst. But she had to find out where he'd come from, and fast.

She took a deep breath. "Well, obviously you're a dragon. You know what this means, right? You really are part of the Dragon Court. Mateo, you can come home with me for sure. But first we need to teach you how to shift back."
